First year VCU coach Mike Rhoades landed his first 2018 commitment on Wednesday night by receiving a verbal commitment from 6’1 point guard, P.J. Byrd. PJ is from Richmond, Texas and attends Bush High School. Byrd fits the VCU traditional fast pace system as he plays up tempo and is known as a tremendous passer because of his great court vision which allows him to constantly make everyone on his team better. After PJ took his visit to VCU to see the campus, he knew it was the place he wanted to be.
“On my visit I was just blown away on the way they do things. Like how they train, how they eat and just the little things. The program and I relate easy when everyone wants to just win.”
When asked about his expectations on how he will be used in their system, he said, “I am going to help us get a lot of turnovers and points at a rapid rate. That is how we win.”
Now that Byrd has his college decision out of the way he said he wants to work on improving his body.
“I want to get stronger because I know the physicality at the next level is tough so I want work on that.”
VCU fans can expect a guy that plays hard every game to do anything that it takes to win. He is a very hard nosed defender and phenomenal passer.
